CNN’s senior data analyst Harry Enten recently remarked on the Democrats’ successful transformation of Florida’s traditionally red state legislative seats, including one in Mar-a-Lago. This development could indicate a potential blue wave in the upcoming midterm elections.
Democratic candidate Emily Gregory scored a notable upset against Republican John Maples, a supporter of Trump, in a special election. During her appearance on CNN’s “Erin Burnett Outfront,” Enten described Gregory’s two-point victory as “symbolic,” highlighting a significant shift from just under two years ago when Trump won the area’s presidential vote by a considerable margin. “In some areas, Trump had an 11-point lead. That’s a major shift, right?” he noted to host Erin Burnett, emphasizing this shift toward the Democrats.
Enten continued, pointing out that this trend isn’t localized; it’s part of a larger, more significant movement happening nationwide. “I’ve analyzed a variety of special elections—state and federal—and what we’re seeing is an average 12-point shift towards the Democratic Party, which is quite striking,” he stated.
Burnett inquired about the implications of this for the midterm elections. Enten explained that historically, special elections have indicated midterm outcomes. “Every time a party has exceeded the presidential benchmark in preceding midterm elections, they successfully took control of the U.S. House of Representatives,” he noted, suggesting that the changes seen in Mar-a-Lago could extend across the country.
Before delving into Enten’s insights, Burnett spoke with Gregory, who was heading to her election night celebration. Although results weren’t officially declared yet, Democrats appeared to be leading. Gregory expressed confidence, noting their focus on key issues like real estate and healthcare, which resonated with voters. “We were engaging with people, listening to their concerns, and that’s what really mattered,” she mentioned.
When asked about the impact of Trump’s role in the campaign, Gregory replied, “For me, it wasn’t a major focus. My opponent emphasized it, but I concentrated on what really matters to families in Florida.” Despite Trump’s backing of her opponent, Gregory remained focused on the issues at hand.
Burnett also questioned her about the ongoing conflict concerning Iran, given that her husband is serving in the military. Gregory expressed her concerns about the “never-ending war” and the personal toll it takes on families, urging for a resolution soon.
