SAN FRANCISCO — Yankees Triumph Over Giants
The Yankees, famed for their powerful hitting, showcased their strength without a home run from Aaron Judge, defeating ace Logan Webb and kicking off the season with a five-game winning streak.
In the second inning, they rapidly transformed a no-out situation into a five-run lead within just ten pitches. A powerful comeback, enhanced by Max Fried’s strong pitching, led to a decisive 7-0 win at a bustling Oracle Park.
Jose Caballero, who drove in the first run, remarked, “We just have to trust each other and keep the line moving. That’s the main idea, and we have a very good lineup that can do this often.”
In retrospect, when the Yankees revamped their roster this offseason, it might have been wise to prioritize retaining a line-up that dominated in runs batted in last season. Even on a night when Judge struggled, going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, they demonstrated their depth.
Fried, despite having a shaky start, managed 6¹/₃ shutout innings, improving as the game continued. He retired 18 of the last 20 batters he faced, reinforcing his status as the Yankees’ ace while they await Gerrit Cole’s return. “If you look at one through nine, you can win,” he noted, emphasizing the team’s supportive approach around their star player.
The Yankees have a long season ahead, with 161 games left to prove their decisions this offseason were sound after last year’s disappointing playoff exit. In this opening game, they relied on a mix of 10-hit offense and strong pitching to start successfully.
“We have a lot to prove,” manager Aaron Boone said. “We’re confident. They know they can have good at-bats and score runs, but we still have a long way to go to show that.”
After a quick start where Webb retired the first four batters, Giancarlo Stanton, who had been strong in preseason, shifted the momentum. With one out and a man on first in the second inning, he put the Yankees ahead. Following a sinker error from Webb to Jazz Chisholm Jr., Caballero brought in Stanton with a double.
Ryan McMahon contributed further, hitting a two-run single to center field, which made it 3-0. Austin Wells, batting at the bottom of the lineup, hit a gentle liner to left-center before Trent Grisham tripled, extending the lead to 5-0.
The Yankees continued pushing against Webb in the fifth, with Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice, and Stanton hitting consecutive singles, bringing the score to 6-0. A throwing error later pushed it to 7-0.
Meanwhile, Fried silenced the Giants after an initial inning where he struggled. They only managed a handful of baserunners through the rest of the game, benefiting from the offensive cushion that allowed him to excel. Boone summarized the night saying, “We didn’t hit the ball out of the park, but it was a night filled with great at-bats. Good night for us.”
