Jose Caballero Makes MLB History with Automated Ball-Strike System

New York Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero achieved a notable milestone on Wednesday, becoming the first player to utilize the automatic ball-strike system (ABS) during a game.

In the fourth inning of the Yankees’ 7-0 victory against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, Caballero called for a review after a strike was called by home plate umpire Bill Miller. This came after Giants pitcher Logan Webb delivered a sinker that appeared high in the strike zone.

At 29, Caballero initiated the challenge by gesturing animatedly, yet ultimately, it didn’t go his way. The ABS, monitored by 12 Hawkeye cameras, confirmed that the pitch was indeed a strike, clocking in at 90.7 mph.

Despite the unsuccessful challenge, Caballero expressed confidence in his decision. “No, I wanted to do it,” he mentioned afterward. He felt that the pitch might have been a bit higher than indicated but still appreciates the ABS system. “I think this is a really good thing. I want everyone to be held accountable,” he said. “This gives us a chance to really see how good we are in zone. I wish we could have flipped the call, but it didn’t work out.”

Caballero’s challenge was the only one during the game, which saw the Yankees in a comfortable 5-0 lead at that point.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone emphasized the importance of open communication with players, noting, “We’ve had a lot of conversations about this, and it’s definitely something we’ve put a lot of effort into.” He mentioned focusing on providing constructive feedback throughout spring training, asserting he has been direct about player performances, both good and bad.

“We feel like we’re going to do well,” he concluded, acknowledging the need for continued evolution in their strategy.

As for the game itself, teams are allowed two challenges. If a challenge is successful, they retain it, but a failed challenge results in losing one. Consequently, the Yankees had one additional challenge remaining after Caballero’s attempt.

Caballero finished the game batting 1-for-4 with an RBI, contributing to the Yankees’ opening season triumph. The team is set to face the Giants again on Friday at 4:35 p.m. ET, looking to build on their promising start.
