Marlene Willis Honored for Volunteer Work with LAPD

Icons recognize icons, and Bruce Willis has certainly learned from one of the best—his mother.

On Wednesday, Marlene Willis, at 90 years old, received recognition from the Los Angeles Police Department for her extensive volunteer service over the decades. Known affectionately at the station as ‘Mrs. Willis’, she has become a significant figure at one of the city’s 21 police stations.

The LAPD highlighted in a statement, “At the age of 90, Mrs. Marlene Willis quietly became a pillar of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Los Angeles Division, dedicating more than 20 years of volunteer service to support officers and staff.” They also pointed out that she spends several days each week reviewing reports and assisting with administrative tasks while offering genuine care for officers returning from tough days on the job. It’s pretty clear that her presence means a lot.

What’s remarkable is that, despite being Bruce Willis’ mother, she has never focused on that. She’s rather chosen to prioritize her commitment to the LAPD, which she considers a second family.

Former LAPD Commissioner Michelle Moore, who has previously awarded Marlene as the LAPD Volunteer of the Year, noted that while they couldn’t make her an officer, she received a special honor instead: “That’s the Justice Center Police Department badge,” Moore said.

Although Marlene keeps her family connections private, it’s noted that she’s quite close to them. Apparently, she has a screensaver featuring a warm hug with her famous son. Moore remarked that Marlene never tried to seek attention through her family ties, which is something quite striking.

Representatives from the Willis family and LAPD have not responded to requests for comment yet. I think her story is truly inspiring; sometimes, it’s the quiet determination of people like Marlene that leaves the most lasting marks on a community.
