Cubs Extend Contract with Nico Hoerner
The Chicago Cubs have secured their second baseman for the foreseeable future.
Nico Hoerner has reached a six-year extension agreement with the team that will see him in Chicago until he’s 35 years old. This was reported by Jon Heyman recently.
As for the specifics of the contract, including the total financial details, those remain unclear at this moment.
This deal comes just as Hoerner, who will celebrate his 29th birthday in May, was set to enter free agency following this season.
Interestingly, this contract follows the Cubs’ recent acquisition of outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who also signed a six-year deal valued at $115 million.
Many key players in Chicago’s batting lineup are currently under long-term contracts. Notably, shortstop Dansby Swanson is signed through 2029, third baseman Alex Bregman won’t hit free agency until 2030, and corner infielder Michael Bush is under team control until 2029.
In a statement to reporters before the Cubs faced a 10-4 loss to the Nationals, Hoerner expressed enthusiasm about his situation: “I really appreciate the opportunity. I enjoy being with a group that is both consistent and full of potential. Combining that with experience feels special. I think we’re in a strong position.”
Reflecting on his first season, Hoerner achieved a .297 batting average with 29 doubles and a 6.2 WAR, in addition to earning his second Gold Glove Award.
However, Cubs manager Craig Counsell believes there’s room for Hoerner to enhance his performance even further: “I have faith that Nico can grow and improve. He has the potential to drive the ball more and is in a good place to showcase that now,” Counsell commented. “But I also want him to stay true to himself. He just needs to step up and perform in his own way.”
