Oscar Piastri’s F1 Journey and Recent Challenges
Oscar Piastri has kicked off his Formula 1 career with impressive results. He ended his rookie season in 2023 ranked ninth in the drivers’ championship, moved up to fourth in 2024 while helping McLaren clinch their first constructors’ title since 1998, and last season saw him competing fiercely for the drivers’ championship, finishing third as McLaren repeated their success.
However, as the third race of the 2026 season approaches, Piastri has yet to complete a single racing lap in a Grand Prix.
His season took a rough turn when he crashed during a reconnaissance lap before his home race at the Australian Grand Prix. Then, before the Chinese Grand Prix, his car failed, sidelining him from that race. Although he managed to finish sixth in the sprint race in Shanghai, earning three points, he found himself struggling in 12th place in the drivers’ standings upon arriving in Japan, a far cry from his previous accomplishments.
Despite the setbacks, Piastri remains resilient and confident.
During a press conference on Friday, McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella praised both of their drivers, particularly highlighting Piastri’s determination after the challenging weekend in Shanghai, where both he and teammate Lando Norris were unable to race due to their car failures.
“I think the start of this season has really tested Oscar’s maturity and strength,” Stella remarked. He emphasized how the team is impressed with Piastri’s capability to handle adversity. “It’s more than just improving as a driver; it’s about growing as a person mentally.” He believes this growth is evident in how Piastri has reacted to the challenges.
Stella also reflected on the rapport between Piastri and Norris, who had a fiercely competitive season the year before.
“I’ve been thinking about their relationship lately; they seem to collaborate effectively,” he noted. “Having gone through the pursuit of a World Championship together, they continue to show mutual respect.” Stella feels their strong connection is something the team has fostered, benefiting both drivers.
“This respect is crucial for our team dynamic. I’m proud of how they work together,” he added. “Considering last season, they’ve matured but are also driven; it’s a fascinating dynamic.” Stella also mentioned if they hadn’t had the challenges of 2025, it would have been interesting to see how things might develop further.
He didn’t stop at individual accolades; Stella praised the overall team spirit in light of the disappointments from Shanghai.
“The team’s reaction to not racing in two grands prix really highlights our strength as a culture,” he explained. He pointed to previous moments of resilience in the team, stating that they’ve shown their capability to succeed even in tough times.
“McLaren is in perhaps its best form since I’ve stepped in as team principal,” Stella observed. “The collaboration between Lando and Oscar is something I think we’re all benefiting from.” He’s optimistic about the future, hoping to see improvements in the upcoming races.
Early indications show that there are signs of recovery as they head to Japan. Despite Mercedes dominating the previous races, McLaren seemed to gain ground during practice sessions at Suzuka, with both Norris and Piastri ranking competitively against the Ferraris, showcasing their potential. In fact, Piastri even topped the timesheets in FP2.
As Norris mentioned earlier in the week, McLaren has a history of bouncing back. Perhaps this latest comeback is beginning.
