Bette Midler, known for her left-leaning views, has put out a new version of “All You Fascists Bound to Lose,” originally a protest song by Woody Guthrie, this time targeting President Donald Trump.
Guthrie first performed this song in 1944, primarily addressing Adolf Hitler and the Axis powers during World War II. However, his lyrics seemed to also reflect his concerns about the “fascists” in America, criticizing racism, Jim Crow laws, and anti-union sentiments.
While Guthrie’s original intentions were aimed at an external enemy, Midler has updated the lyrics to encourage resistance against ICE and Trump, while also calling for Democratic votes in the upcoming midterm elections.
She even introduces the song with a personal reflection before it starts.
“You know, I’ve seen a lot in my time,” she says in her opening remarks. “But what we’re going through now is unlike anything I’ve felt before.”
“Woody Guthrie wrote this song ages ago,” she adds. “I’ve adjusted the words for today. I hope you’ll join in when you march because sometimes it’s necessary to sing it loudly.”
Midler’s new lyrics are sharp, taking aim at ICE, Trump, the Epstein dossier, and the upcoming elections.
