Tiger Woods Taken into Custody After Rollover Crash in Florida

Tiger Woods was arrested following a rollover accident on Jupiter Island, Florida, on Friday, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

During a press conference, Sheriff John Budensiek stated that the five-time Masters winner was driving at a “high rate of speed” when he struck another vehicle and rolled onto the driver’s side. Reports suggest that Woods managed to “crawl” out of the car through the passenger side.

FOX News contributor Jim Gray characterized this incident as just another chapter in Woods’ ongoing “sad story.” He commented on Woods’ remarkable status in the world of golf, mentioning that while Jack Nicklaus has won more majors, Tiger is still regarded as perhaps the greatest ever.

“This is indeed a sad story, and it just continues to unfold,” Gray noted. “We’ve been eager to see him back on the course, but it raises questions. If this is happening multiple times, who’s in his circle? Why does he keep facing these situations? It seems he was proficient behind the wheel, so maybe he needs someone else to drive him for a change.”

Authorities indicated that Woods showed signs of impairment, although he registered a “triple zero” for alcohol and opted out of a urine test. Budensiek detailed, “DUI investigators were on scene and noted signs of impairment. We considered his past injuries and surgeries, but conducted thorough tests on-site.” He further explained that while they initially found no evidence of alcohol involvement, Woods refused to comply with the urine test and was subsequently charged with DUI and criminal damage to property.

Jim Gray expressed his concern, recognizing a troubling trend. “This feels like a cry for help. Someone needs to step in—get him a driver and keep him off the road. He’s undergone so many surgeries, and such experiences often lead to chronic pain that needs management. It’s tough to say if he’s struggling with that directly, but there’s a pattern that’s troubling. Fortunately, he hasn’t caused as much harm this time around.”

The Masters is approaching, starting on April 9 at Augusta National, and Woods has indicated that he isn’t ruling out participation in this significant tournament. However, since winning the green jacket in 2019, he hasn’t placed in the top 20 for 14 majors, marking his longest streak without such a finish since the mid-90s. In the past 26 major events, he has only cracked the top 20 four times.

His best showing since tying for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open was a tie for 37th at the 2020 PGA Championship. The last professional tournament he participated in was in 2024, where he only played a few majors, withdrawing from one and finishing last in another.

“He’s delivered us countless moments of joy. It would be heartening to see him overcome such challenges and engage with life normally,” Gray reflected. “He doesn’t need to live up to his former glory; his past achievements are well established.”
