Government Shutdown Debate Focuses on ICE
During a CNN segment, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was questioned about whether the ongoing government shutdown was truly related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or just a tactic in negotiations.
Last week, the Senate was unable to resolve the partial government shutdown, primarily because Democrats opted not to vote, which has left Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees without pay. In his interview on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” guest host Phil Mattingly confronted Jeffries directly about the role of ICE and its policies in the current discussions, yet Jeffries sidestepped giving a straightforward response.
“Is this about ICE, or is it purely a negotiation mechanism, a tool to get the negotiations you want on ICE limits?” Mattingly inquired.
In response, Jeffries criticized the previous Republican Congress, alleging that ICE operates with a multibillion-dollar fund.
“ICE has a $75 billion slush fund that is part of the Republican One Big Ugly Act, passed last year with only Republican votes. This act stripped Americans of Medicaid and cut $186 billion in nutrition assistance, impacting vulnerable populations like children, seniors, and veterans. Thus, the battle over policy priorities goes on,” Jeffries stated.
He further claimed that Republicans are using TSA operations and air travel as leverage in the immigration debate.
“House Democrats believe taxpayer money should improve affordability for Americans rather than being used for violent actions against law-abiding immigrant families. We also want Republicans to stop using TSA agents and travelers as pawns in their extreme immigration policies,” Jeffries emphasized.
Democrats have obstructed funding for the Department of Homeland Security to introduce new limitations on ICE’s operations, particularly in response to recent incidents, including the shootings of Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Good during a protest against federal immigration actions in Minneapolis earlier this year. Notably, Democratic Senator John Fetterman was the only member of his party to support a year-round DHS spending bill, while Elon Musk has suggested that TSA workers should be compensated effectively, criticizing Democrats for leaving them reliant on food donations.
Fetterman expressed his stance, stating, “I was the only Democrat this entire time who refused to shut down the government. This is wrong. You may want to reform ICE, which is, I think, reasonable, but it doesn’t directly impact that.”
