Just days after narrowly escaping a suspension for accumulating technical fouls, Lakers star Luka Doncic received his 16th technical foul of the season during a game on Friday night, leading to a one-game suspension for the team’s next match.
It all unfolded in the third quarter during a face-off with Nets forward Zaire Williams, resulting in a double technical foul. The situation escalated when Doncic was called for an offensive foul on Nic Claxton during an inbound play, leaving him visibly frustrated.
After a turnover, Williams was right next to Doncic, shouting, which seemed to ignite the altercation. Doncic responded by shoving Williams, who then retaliated by punching Doncic in the face from behind. The referee’s review confirmed the sequence, leading to the double technical calls.
Doncic expressed his bewilderment after the game, saying, “Of course it’s a double technique. What else could I say? It felt exaggerated, but… well, I’m not sure what else to add.” It seems like emotions ran high on the court, as they often do.
Given the context, it’s unlikely Doncic will find a reprieve from the one-game suspension mandated by league rules. Coach JJ Reddick hinted that there might be an appeal, indicating the coaching staff is still trying to digest what happened during that tense moment.
Interestingly, Doncic had previously been given a 16th technical foul in a March 21 match against the Magic, but that was later rescinded, allowing him to play against the Pistons just two days later.
If this latest technical foul isn’t overturned, Doncic will indeed sit out the game against the Wizards on Monday. This situation marks the first instance of Doncic facing suspension for technical fouls in his career, despite getting close on a few other occasions in previous seasons. It’s an unusual turn of events, reflecting how tightly regulated these things can get.
Throughout his career, Doncic has had brush-ins with technical fouls, hitting 15 three times before this season. The tension in these games is palpable, and given Doncic’s competitive nature, it’s not surprising he sometimes finds himself at risk of suspension.
