Scouting America Addresses ‘Woke’ Labels While Focusing on Youth Training
Scouting America, a Texas-based organization that evolved from the Boy Scouts of America, has been actively combating the notion of being “woke.” Its renewed emphasis is on equipping young people with essential life skills and offering engaging outdoor experiences, while also deepening ties with the U.S. military.
Founded in February 1910 by Lt. Gen. Robert Baden-Powell, Scouting America continues to commit itself to teaching values like faith, character, and service. Recently, they replaced a merit badge focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion with one that highlights military themes.
Chief Scout Officer Roger Krone mentioned to some news outlets that the Scouts have played significant roles in key historical moments, which he believes underscores the program’s impact and weathered relevance.
“It’s interesting, actually. Almost all but one of the astronauts who have walked on the moon were Scouts,” he remarked. “And there’s definitely a segment of our members who prefer military uniforms over their Scout gear. We have a longstanding relationship with the military.”
Notably, in 1915, Scouting America established the Order of the Arrow, an honor society designed to recognize exceptional service among Scouts, initiated by professional Scouter E. Erner Goodman at the Treasure Island Scout Reservation.
John F. Kennedy holds the distinction of being the first President who was a Scout, and Gerald Ford is recognized as the only individual to attain the Eagle Scout rank while in office. Though Jimmy Carter never participated as a Scout, he was later awarded the BSA’s Silver Buffalo Award for his support of Georgia’s Scouts.
In line with reaffirming its commitment to American values, Scouting America is waiving registration fees for military children who wish to join the America 250 program.
“For over 116 years, we have focused on fostering patriotic Americans based on faith, character, and service,” noted Krone. “Our connection to the military exemplifies our shared belief in that leadership and patriotism are not just ideas but values nurtured through dedication and action. Our programs are tailored to instill these principles in future leaders.”
Interestingly, 15% of military academy cadets are Eagle Scouts, and more than 130 million individuals have gone through the Boy Scouts since its inception.
Krone referenced the movement’s founder, Baden-Powell, who, following the Industrial Revolution, sought to provide guidance for London’s youth through merit-based initiatives.
Scouting America, while facing scrutiny for admitting girls over the years, maintains that their standards and requirements remain equal across genders. “The focus is always on skill-building through outdoor experiences, regardless of whether you’re a boy or girl,” he explained.
Moreover, he highlighted the organization’s ongoing battle against screen time, emphasizing that Scouting provides an avenue for children to engage in the outdoors and community service, rather than being glued to devices.
Krone acknowledged, “There’s a need today to pull kids away from their devices. Writers are already addressing how detrimental this can be. Our programs aim for ‘social without media’—encouraging real-world connection.”
Recently, youth leaders from Scouting America met with Congressional representatives, reinforcing their mission. Legislators noted the importance of the program in encouraging kids to embrace outdoor activities and develop essential life skills away from screens.
To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, participants must accumulate at least 21 merit badges, which include mandatory citizenship-related badges. These badges cover the essentials of civics and the founding principles of the U.S., along with encouragement to engage with local lawmakers on pressing issues.
The Scout Law—comprising twelve tenets outlining principles of conduct—still serves as a guiding force for all involved. The motto of Scouting remains “Do a Good Turn Daily,” alongside its longstanding slogan, “Be Prepared.”
