Ukrainian President Zelenskiy Discusses Defense Cooperation in the Gulf
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced a defense partnership with the United Arab Emirates, following Iranian drone attacks affecting Gulf regions. This collaboration comes as he visits several Gulf countries, including an earlier stop in Saudi Arabia.
Zelenskiy’s trip, which caught many by surprise, is partly a response to the increasing threat posed by Iranian drones, launched as a reaction to U.S. and Israeli actions. Ukraine is now looking to leverage its experience in counter-drone strategies, assisting Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar with their defenses.
In a statement made while in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, Zelenskiy confirmed the defense agreement stating, “We have agreed to cooperate in the field of security and defense. Our teams will finalize the details.” He emphasized the importance of stability and safeguarding lives, indicating that Ukraine’s expertise could play a crucial role in these efforts.
Upon arriving in Qatar, he reiterated through social media that “true security is built on partnerships.” He expressed gratitude for those willing to collaborate toward enhancing regional security. This visit was later confirmed by Qatar’s state news agency.
Ukraine is promoting its anti-drone capabilities, claiming them to be among the best globally. Meanwhile, there have been discussions surrounding Iran’s proposal to upgrade to more advanced and costly air defense systems to combat drone threats, as Ukraine faces ongoing missile assaults from Russia.
“Protection must be sufficient everywhere,” Zelenskiy remarked, highlighting the potential for joint operations that would bolster security measures for all involved. He also met with Ukrainian counter-drone specialists in the UAE, who are actively working to prevent loss of life amid these risks.
He further pointed out that Ukraine is not only in need of assistance but is also eager to lend help to those ready to contribute to their mutual goals.
