Driver Arrested for DUI in Self-Driving Car

In Northern California, a driver was taken into custody on a DUI charge after being discovered slumped and unconscious at the wheel of his self-driving vehicle, which continued to navigate a crowded street.

This unsettling incident took place shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Vacaville, located about 55 miles southwest of Sacramento. Concerned citizens called 911, reporting that the driver appeared to be unresponsive, according to the Vacaville Police Department.

What’s more alarming is that the car kept moving in traffic, posing risks to other drivers. The caller stayed on the line, providing real-time updates that allowed officers to safely halt the vehicle near Elmira Road and Shasta Drive.

Images shared by the police depict the driver leaning back in his seat, seemingly asleep, while still in traffic.

Upon investigation, officers found several red flags inside the vehicle.

Photos show open wine boxes, partially consumed bottles, and take-out food scattered across the passenger seat, along with various other loose items in the car.

Authorities determined the driver was under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana, leading to his arrest for suspected drunk driving.

Social media lit up with reactions after the police posted images from the scene. One comment noted, “His car had more situational awareness than him at that time.” Other users expressed gratitude for the swift actions of the callers and responders, emphasizing that a potential tragedy was averted. One person even remarked, “Thank God no one was hurt. Great job getting this guy off the road.”

The Vacaville Police Department stressed that while many modern vehicles come equipped with driver assistance features, these technologies are no replacement for an attentive and sober driver.

They praised the quick thinking of the caller, which prevented what could have been a serious accident, reminding the community that such vigilant actions contribute to safer streets.
