Swimmer Rescued After Getting Stranded on San Francisco Cliff
A swimmer rescued from a precarious cliff in San Francisco has shared the events that led to his dramatic situation.
Maxime Rancourt decided to take a dip in the chilly waters of Ocean Beach, captivated by the beauty of the waves, when a powerful current pulled him further away from the shore.
“I’m a decent swimmer, but I don’t usually swim there,” he admitted, reflecting on how quickly the current swept him about 50 meters out to sea.
Aerial footage captured Rancourt as he clung to a rock, perilously perched about 70 feet from the top of the cliff near the Cliff House restaurant.
“The current was really strong. I jumped in and grabbed onto some rocks to try to stay put, but the waves just kept coming,” he recounted.
Things escalated quickly, as he recalled climbing from left to right on the rock, realizing that it might not be his best move. “But in that moment, I just wanted to save myself,” he added.
Video footage revealed Rancourt hanging onto the cliffside while a passerby promptly called 911, prompting a swift response from the fire department.
Rescue teams carefully lowered cables for his protection, while firefighters made their way down to reach him.
When asked about his thoughts regarding the person who called for help, he expressed immense gratitude. “I just want to say, thank you so much. Because of this person, I have a future,” he shared.
Reflecting on the experience, he mentioned, “It was surreal. My fate could have changed in just a minute.”
