Sen. Cory Booker Reflects on Past Comments About Trump

During a recent interview, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) was shown a video of himself from 2016, when he stated, “I love Donald Trump,” while campaigning for the presidency. NBC’s Kristen Welker prompted him about his feelings toward the current president.

Welker pointed out, “You’ve previously run for president in 2020 on a message of love, the same one you expressed in 2016. Let’s take a look at your words from that time.” In the clip, Booker emphasizes, “I love Donald Trump. I won’t respond to his hate with hate. I won’t let his darkness bring me down. I love him.”

When asked if his feelings had changed, Booker replied, “I’m a Christian, and my beliefs are pretty clear. Love your enemies. Don’t let someone push you to the point of hate. That doesn’t mean I won’t challenge him vigorously to protect healthcare and education for everyone.”

He then quoted the Declaration of Independence, reflecting on the need for a return to “sacred honor” in America. “God bless America,” he added, noting the importance of unity in the nation.

Booker also expressed concern that hatred is dividing America. He mentioned the need for leaders who strive to unite rather than divide, stating, “I won’t hate my colleagues in Congress. I want to engage with others, bring people together, and focus on our shared success as one nation under God.”

When asked about his plans for the 2028 presidential race, he said he’s not dismissing the idea. “I’m focused on re-election right now, and I hope New Jersey will support me for another six years,” he stated, confirming that he hadn’t ruled out a future presidential run.
