Mike Rowe upset by Kimmel's joke about new DHS chief being a former plumber

Mike Rowe Critiques Jimmy Kimmel’s Commentary on New DHS Secretary

Mike Rowe, the host of “Everyman,” recently criticized late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for what he deemed a “tone-deaf” remark aimed at the new Homeland Security Secretary, Mark Wayne Mullin, who has a background as a plumber. Rowe expressed that Kimmel’s comment, which suggested Mullin’s plumbing past was a detriment, was offensive and somewhat elitist.

Rowe articulated his disappointment, challenging the idea that skilled labor should never transition into different roles. He questioned whether Mullin’s journey—from running a plumbing business to holding significant political office—wasn’t a reflection of the American dream. “It’s like saying that skilled workers can’t aim higher,” Rowe pointed out, emphasizing the need to evolve beyond a single profession.

“I find humor in a lot of things, but I think it’s crucial to elevate skilled trades rather than belittle them,” Rowe shared in a post on X. “I mean, if I’m in need of a new kidney, I would definitely want a doctor, not just a late-night talk show host. But, if that doctor once hosted a show, what’s the big deal?”

Kimmel Stands By His Remarks

Kimmel, known for his critiques of the Trump administration, faced backlash last week for mocking Mullin’s plumbing experience, implying it rendered him unqualified for his new role. “This is just the kind of logic that has led us to a point where plumbers are now seen as security experts,” Kimmel quipped. He added humorous suggestions about other unlikely candidates for Homeland Security positions.

Later, Kimmel clarified that he didn’t object to Mullin’s background as a plumber; he was frustrated that he was now in a position of such responsibility. He compared it to the absurdity of having a military general handle household issues. “We all have our own areas of expertise,” he remarked.

Rowe, however, saw Kimmel’s comments as indicative of a larger issue, noting how many felt Kimmel was disparaging necessary working-class jobs. He emphasized that America is currently experiencing a significant shortage of skilled workers, a situation he believes poses a national security risk. “It’s imperative to recognize the growing skills gap,” Rowe stated. He argued that the country would benefit from a workforce that combines technical skills with higher education.

“Mullin’s story is impressive,” Rowe continued. “He started from nothing, developed critical skills, and built a successful business. That journey is what gives him the credibility to serve in his current capacity.” He asked rhetorically if this trajectory wasn’t a shining example of the American dream.

In closing, Rowe stated his desire for a more respectful discourse regarding skilled trades and their contributions, asking if critics could genuinely discredit Mullin’s choice to pursue diverse opportunities. “I think that’s a conversation worth having, rather than dismissing someone’s past.” He humorously added he had to attend to more urgent matters, like “getting the rats out of the bathroom.”
