2028 Presidential Race: Vance and Rubio in the Spotlight

Vice President J.D. Vance has often been regarded as the potential successor to President Donald Trump and his loyal MAGA supporters. As the speculation for the 2028 presidential race heats up, Vance stands out as a front-runner. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has started to gain traction, particularly as the focus shifts post-midterm elections.

Rubio’s popularity for a presidential bid has surged recently, driven by his heightened visibility during U.S. operations in Venezuela and ongoing tensions with Iran. A recent straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) showed Rubio finishing second, a notable rise where he garnered 35% of the votes, compared to a mere 3% last year.

Although Vance continues to enjoy strong support from MAGA voters, his approval ratings dipped slightly to 53% from 61% last year. Other Republican hopefuls for 2028 find themselves trailing significantly, scoring in the low single digits during this informal survey.

Interestingly, recent data from St. Anselm College in New Hampshire indicates a similar trend, highlighting Rubio’s increasing support. This has sparked curiosity within the Republican Party about a budding rivalry between Rubio and Vance, who maintain they are friends.

Neil Levesque, head of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, noted that Rubio’s rising favorability comes from voters perceiving him as a reliable member of the Trump administration. His ascent is also bolstered by Trump’s praise, with the President asserting that Rubio could be remembered as the “greatest secretary of state of all time.”

While Trump has spoken positively about a potential Vance-Rubio ticket, he acknowledges Vance as a likely successor, adding to the intrigue surrounding their political futures. Vance has been coy about his 2028 ambitions but is building a team of advisors prepared to launch a campaign if he decides to run.

In contrast, Rubio has indicated that he would back Vance should the Vice President choose to enter the race. He remarked that Vance would be their candidate and he would be among the first to support him.

Some Republican insiders, however, have raised concerns over a group of donors looking to enhance Rubio’s profile, suggesting such efforts could create unnecessary division. An operative in Trump’s circle emphasized Vance as the Republican Party’s future, highlighting the need for unity instead of chaos.

Vance himself recently addressed these perceived tensions, affirming his friendship with Rubio and suggesting that media narratives about conflict are unfounded. “It’s not a conflict,” Vance stated in an interview, aiming to quell any notions of rivalry.
