Concerns Over Meghan Markel from Queen Elizabeth II

A new book reveals that Queen Elizabeth II had reservations about her grandson Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, from the outset. The upcoming release by political reporter Susan Page, titled “The Queen and the President: The Hidden Hand That Shaped History”, reflects this perspective.

Aides from the palace indicated that the Queen grew skeptical of Meghan early on, branding her as someone who was calculating and skilled in managing her public persona. According to Page, “Her Majesty the Queen was wary of Meghan as an opportunist who, according to an aide, was ‘favored from the start’ and had the public relations skills to bypass the Palace’s old-fashioned communication practices.”

In a previous memoir, Prince Harry mentioned that Meghan’s initial meeting with the Queen occurred in October 2016. This was at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, and they both recounted that it was an impromptu encounter—Meghan even had to practice bowing beforehand since she wasn’t aware of the protocol.

Both he and Meghan have expressed feelings that his family might have reservations due to her background as an American actress. Looking back, Harry noted, “I think they were surprised that a ginger could capture such a beautiful and intelligent woman.” He elaborated on how the perception of Meghan being an American actress possibly clouded their judgment: “This isn’t going to last.”

In a 2021 interview, Meghan described the Queen as “amazing,” highlighting her warmth and welcoming demeanor.

Prince Harry and Meghan announced their engagement in November 2017 and married the following May. However, in early 2020, Meghan declared her decision to step down as a senior royal and relocate, a choice that reportedly caused the Queen disappointment.

Page’s book also addresses Harry’s feelings of being the “spare” sibling, suggesting that some of his bitterness towards palace staff and family is rooted in being treated as less significant than Prince William, the heir apparent. “Prince Harry complained that he was put in a bedroom ‘miles away’ from Prince William’s exclusive surroundings,” an aide reportedly said.

There are also lingering rumors regarding Harry’s parentage, with some palace staff speculating about whether he is truly Prince Charles’ biological son. This speculation has been continually denied but remains a subject of gossip, particularly given the historical ties to Princess Diana’s past relationships. In his memoir, Harry recounted a darkly humorous moment where Charles joked about Harry’s parentage, making remarks that created additional emotional strain for Harry, especially following Diana’s tragic passing when he was just twelve.

The book “The Queen and the President: The Hidden Hands That Shaped History” is set to be released on April 14th.
