Knicks overcome Grizzlies without Jalen Brunson to snap losing streak

Memphis, Tenn. — Knicks Overcome Grizzlies in Must-Win Game

In a technical sense, the Knicks met Josh Hart’s declaration of a “must win” showdown.

Still, despite a record-setting first quarter, the game turned out to be a challenge. The Knicks battled through a lackluster second half to secure a 130-119 win against the Grizzlies.

During that dominant first quarter, the Knicks racked up 48 points, tying a franchise record. Although they seemed poised for a strong performance in Memphis, they struggled in the second half, allowing the Grizzlies to narrow the deficit to three points in the third quarter. Coach Mike Brown had to keep his starters on the floor until the end.

Mikal Bridges commented, “It was good to share the ball and make plays. Defensively, we were better, but we still let in too many points. Offensively, our movement was solid. But there’s room for improvement on defense.”

Bridges was active, contributing 24 points, while OG Anunoby led the team with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Karl-Anthony Towns was a key player, achieving his fourth career triple-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Although the effort wasn’t perfect, following three consecutive losses and a tough defeat in Houston the day before, a win felt significant.

After the game, the locker room atmosphere was notably better compared to the prior night when a frustrated Towns had left without commenting to the press.

“This was about bringing the group back together,” Towns stated.

In the wake of the loss to the Rockets, Hart had emphasized the importance of the game against Memphis.

And the Knicks started strong, dominating right from the first quarter.

During the opening 12 minutes, they shot a remarkable 81 percent, including five three-pointers, and dished out 14 assists. Six players scored five or more points, helping them build an 18-point lead early and holding a 17-point advantage at halftime.

However, the Grizzlies came alive in the third quarter, aggressively attacking and hitting three-pointers. Anunoby had to step up, scoring 17 points in the fourth to secure the win.

“We were taking the same shots, just like before, but this time they went in,” Anunoby remarked.

The offensive performance was statistically impressive, sparking discussions about the Knicks playing more freely without Brunson.

But there are nuances to consider. The Knicks (49-28) faced the struggling Grizzlies (25-51), who are among the worst teams in the league, featuring a lineup mostly composed of G League players.

Key players like Ja Morant and Zach Eady were sidelined with injuries, while Brandon Clark, also hurt, faced legal issues in Arkansas.

The Grizzlies had two rookies, some second-round picks, and a player on a two-way contract in their starting five.

Additionally, they recently added three players on 10-day contracts to their roster.

This latest match marked the Grizzlies’ 15th loss in 17 games.

As for the Knicks, they remain in third place in the East, trailing the second-place Celtics by two and a half games and 1.5 games behind the Cavaliers.

The Knicks have been consistent against teams with losing records, winning ten straight, while they have struggled against winning teams, including their recent blowout loss to Houston. Hart expressed concern, stating, “We need to understand we’re not heading in the right direction. Even with this win in Memphis, it was crucial for us.”

Coach Brown commended the team’s urgent mindset. “It’s encouraging to see that attitude,” he noted. While they managed a solid response in Memphis, there are clearly aspects needing improvement.

Bridges added, “I’m not happy we didn’t catch up in the second half and let them get away. They play hard; they’re a good young team. But, honestly, that’s not acceptable for us.”
