U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert in Baghdad

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad sent out an urgent security alert to Americans on Thursday, indicating that Iran-aligned terrorist groups might be planning attacks in central Baghdad within the next couple of days.

“Iraqi terrorist militia groups aligned with Iran may intend to conduct attacks in central Baghdad in the next 24-48 hours,” the Embassy cautioned. “U.S. citizens should leave Iraq now.”

The Embassy detailed that these groups have previously targeted U.S. citizens and American-associated sites across Iraq. There’s concern they may now focus on U.S. nationals, businesses, and institutions, as well as Iraqi entities and civilian sites. They also pointed out that there’s a risk of kidnapping for Americans by these militias.

“The Iraqi government has not prevented terrorist attacks in or from Iraqi territory,” the Embassy added, noting that some terrorist groups may falsely claim affiliation with the Iraqi government while possessing government ID.

While embassy and consulate staff are still providing assistance, they are under ordered departure amid the heightened threat level. Americans were advised not to approach the Embassy in Baghdad or the consulate in Erbil, suggesting instead that they reach out via email.

Travelers were reminded that commercial flights are currently unavailable from Iraq, with the airspace closed. However, land borders with neighboring countries such as Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey remain open, although not all of them offer flights.

The U.S. Department of State has had Iraq under a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory for several years now. The ongoing conflict with Iran has resulted in orders for non-emergency U.S. government employees to evacuate.

On February 28, the U.S., in collaboration with Israel, initiated strikes on Iran through Operation Epic Fury, hitting over 9,000 targets according to U.S. Central Command. In retaliation, Iran has launched several attacks in the region, including strikes against the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad last month.

Recently, President Donald Trump estimated that the military campaign might wrap up in the next two to three weeks.

This week also saw the abduction of American journalist Shelly Kittleson in Baghdad, with reports indicating that one of the suspects has ties to an Iranian-backed militia.
