High Gas Prices in Big Sur Area

Those driving through Big Sur should be prepared for steep gas prices.

A gas station in the small community of Gorda-by-the-Sea is charging nearly $10 a gallon, making what used to be a routine stop quite costly. “In Los Angeles, the price is about $6. That’s already surprising enough,” noted driver Gustavo Fraga. “But here? It’s $10. I’ve never experienced anything like that.”

Interestingly, the pump does not display prices exceeding $9.99, as that’s the limit set by the station’s system.

According to station owner Leo Flores, he isn’t trying to overcharge customers. His pumps are powered by generators, and the fuel must be transported across challenging terrain. This contributes to rising costs at every step of the logistics.

Many drivers aren’t filling up their tanks completely; instead, they’re opting to buy just enough to reach the next station. “You might end up spending $20. If you need gas, you just have to pay it,” expressed one driver.

For travelers used to California’s already high gas prices—a state average of $5.89 per gallon—Gorda’s prices feel even more extreme. But locals suggest this reflects the reality of isolation. There aren’t many other fueling options along this stretch of Highway 1, and drivers must either pay the high price or risk running out of gas.
