Security Measures Intensified for Pope’s Easter Events in Rome
Law enforcement in Rome is gearing up as the city prepares for the upcoming Good Friday Stations of the Cross and other Easter celebrations led by Pope Leo XIV.
This year, the Pope will carry the cross during the Via Crucis at the Colosseum on Friday evening. It’s a significant occasion, marking the first time a pope has participated in Holy Week events since his election last year. His predecessor, Pope Francis, had to step back from these duties due to health issues in his later years.
The procession is set to kick off around 9:15 PM local time, after which the Pope will speak to the crowd and impart the Apostolic Blessing.
Pope Leo shared this week that he aims to lead such a solemn gathering to convey an important message about his role: as a spiritual leader for the world and a voice for those who still feel the pain of Christ’s suffering. Reports indicate that hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected in Rome for the Holy Week activities, starting Friday.
By Thursday, local authorities had devised a detailed security plan to ensure safety at over 4,000 key sites throughout the city. This plan covers various places of worship, including St. Peter’s Basilica, transit hubs like train and subway stations, and popular tourist spots.
The security measures extend to American, Jewish, and Arab sites, particularly concerning locations in nearby regions affected by ongoing conflicts.
About 1,000 police officers will be on duty, aided by volunteers and civil protection personnel, to maintain order during the celebrations. Traffic restrictions and road closures have been implemented in anticipation of crowds.
In addition to the road closures, authorities are enforcing a towing policy for improperly parked vehicles and have placed a ban on bicycles and electric scooters.
Rome’s police chief, Roberto Masucci, has stated that they are following a heightened security protocol, especially given that this year, the Pope is reviving traditional practices.
On Easter Sunday, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Square, followed by the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” blessing. The post-Easter season will commence on April 6, Easter Monday, starting with the regina coeli prayers every Sunday until Pentecost.
