Mayor’s New Childcare Initiative and Cardi B’s Involvement
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani highlighted rapper Cardi B on Friday as part of a new childcare initiative targeting 2-year-olds. This initiative even includes a contest for jingles to promote future announcements.
Mamdani, who’s known for his music under the name Young Cardamom and contributed to his mother Meera Nair’s 2016 film, Queen of Katwe, previously made headlines with this announcement. A video posted showcased Cardi B humorously asking, “Can you believe we have a 30-year-old mayor?” to which Mamdani responded, “I will.”
Cardi B followed up with, “I feel like I’m a kid and you’re running you,” prompting Mamdani to assure her, “I’ll be right there.” When discussing the importance of free childcare, Cardi emphasized its significance, stating, “Sometimes we women find it difficult to move forward because we don’t have anyone to help us take care of our children.”
Mamdani elaborated on the new initiative, saying, “This fall, we will begin offering Universal 2K. It’s just like pre-K but for 2-year-olds, with 2,000 seats available starting in the Bronx. Enrollment begins in June, and we will have a jingle creation contest.” He welcomed New Yorkers to submit their jingles and asked who would be interested in judging.
Cardi B enthusiastically agreed to be a judge, pointing out that while the mayor would assist, she would ultimately make the final decision because he has the funds.
This public appearance comes after several recent political campaigns did not go as expected for Cardi B. She endorsed Rep. Jasmine Crockett during the Texas Democratic Senate primary, who then moved on past State Representative James Talarico. Cardi B also supported Kamala Harris, who is gearing up for another election in 2024, alongside backing Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders in previous campaigns.
The rapper has also stirred up controversy with her outspoken nature. For instance, she remarked during a February concert that if ICE agents showed up, she would intimidate them into “jumping.” After Donald Trump won the 2024 election, she posted, then deleted, a video blaming Trump supporters for “hurricanes in some states,” warning them to leave her alone or face her wrath.
In terms of her music, Cardi B’s hit song “WAP” was celebrated by National Public Radio as one of the best songs of 2020. She made a guest appearance on a children’s show, Baby Shark’s Big Show, in 2022 with her husband Offset and daughter Kulture in an episode titled “Seaweed Shaking.”
Recently, she faced incidents at concerts, including a situation in Las Vegas where a liquid was thrown at her. Cardi B also testified about a civil lawsuit alleging that she did not assault a security guard during an altercation outside a clinic in 2018.
