Man Experiences Sepsis and Triple Amputation Following Regular Dental Check-Up

Texas Father Faces Health Crisis After Dental Appointment

A routine dental appointment took a tragic turn for a Texas father, who, after visiting the dentist, found himself in a dire health situation leading to septic shock and a triple amputation.

Davon Vanterpool, 34, went for a regular check-up on December 29 and returned home only to discover his gums were bleeding.

His wife, Alicia Wilder, 31, came back from errands just 45 minutes later to find him critically ill.

“I knew something was very wrong,” Wilder has shared about that horrifying moment.

She recounted that as he lay there, he was shaking uncontrollably, expressing confusion and fear: “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m so cold, and I can’t stop shaking.” He was also experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea.

On a GoFundMe page, Wilder noted that despite his condition, Vanterpool, who is 6 feet 8 inches tall and known as a “gentle giant” by friends and family, managed to drive himself to urgent care before being admitted to the emergency room, where his health deteriorated quickly.

Once he reached the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with septic shock. His vital organs began to shut down, necessitating a ventilator and a medically induced coma. Wilder shared that he endured two cardiac arrests and needed resuscitation, followed by double bypass surgery.

Wilder speculated that the dentist’s probing, which resulted in bleeding, triggered his critical condition.

Sepsis, also known as blood poisoning, is a severe and life-threatening response to infections, which can arise from sources like the mouth.

Wilder described Vanterpool as a typically active person, engaged in daily activities as a father and provider before his appointment.

Following his critical condition, he developed a rare and serious skin condition leading to significant tissue damage, resulting in the need for multiple amputations: his right leg, part of his left leg, his right hand, and part of his left forearm.

Wilder later reported that Vanterpool had begun making strides in speech therapy, expressing his longing for their daughters and his mixed feelings of fear amidst a brave front.

As of now, he is off life support but continues to face ongoing illness and expenses related to extensive surgeries and rehabilitation. His family is raising funds to help cover these costs.
