Jimmy Song discusses the importance of a ‘conservative’ node client for Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Network Needs Conservative Client Node Software, Says Expert

According to Jimmy Song, co-founder of ProductionReady—an organization focused on funding open-source development and education surrounding Bitcoin node software—there’s a call for a “conservative” approach in Bitcoin client node software implementation. This, he believes, is essential to preserving Bitcoin’s monetary nature while bolstering network decentralization.

In a conversation with Cointelegraph, Song expressed his organization’s bias against significant changes to the code unless there’s substantial community backing. He shared a guiding principle: “If you’re not certain that a change will benefit you, perhaps it’s best not to implement it.” This cautious stance reflects deep consideration for the network’s future.

ProductionReady aims to reinstate the previous 83-byte OP_Return data limit for non-monetary information within Bitcoin transactions. Song emphasizes that restricting arbitrary data can help minimize node storage costs, which is critical for decentralization. He pointed out that increasing the self-sovereignty of Bitcoin users directly contributes to a more decentralized and resilient network, stressing the importance of keeping operating costs low enough for regular users.

“As storage and bandwidth needs rise, fewer individuals engage in their own validation, which inherently centralizes the network,” he continued. “Conservative clients take this tradeoff into account.” Making nodes more accessible to everyday users not only strengthens the Bitcoin network but also mitigates risks, such as the potential for fraudulent activities or attempts by a handful of attackers to centralize control.

Backlash Over Bitcoin Core 30 Changes

Concerns surrounding node storage and on-chain spam had become increasingly relevant following the 2025 update in Bitcoin Core version 30. This major upgrade saw a unilateral change in the data limit, escalating tensions within the community. Despite substantial opposition, the limit was raised from 83 bytes to a staggering 100,000 bytes. Interestingly, the proposal to increase the limit faced around four times as many down votes compared to up votes on its GitHub page.

The Bitcoin Core 30 implementation, which launched in October 2025, triggered a notable increase in the number of Bitcoin nodes operating the Bitcoin Knots alternative node software. Currently, as per Coin Dance, there are approximately 4,746 Bitcoin Knots nodes, making up over 21.7% of the total network nodes. To illustrate the shift, only about 1% of nodes were using Knots software prior to the removal of the OP_Return feature announcement in 2024.
