Dan Hurley clashes with UConn's Braylon Mullins after Final Four win

Dan Hurley’s Enthusiastic Celebrations

Dan Hurley seems to have a knack for making memorable moments, especially when he gets caught up in the excitement of a game.

During a sideline chat following the University’s 71-62 victory over Illinois in the Final Four, Hurley, visibly thrilled about securing a spot in the NCAA Championship, celebrated by playfully headbutting guard Braylon Mullins. The two bumped heads as Hurley yelled with excitement, but the moment drew some loud boos from the crowd.

“Booing? Headbutting? I don’t know what you’re booing,” Hurley quipped, seemingly amused by the crowd’s reaction.

He later praised Mullins for his stellar performance, noting he scored 15 points, made two steals, and shot 4-of-7 from the field. “He’s been great. He got us here, started strong, and closed it out with a three-pointer,” Hurley commented on his player’s contributions.

This wasn’t Hurley’s first encounter of this kind. Earlier, he had also bumped heads with referee Roger Ayers after Mullins nailed a game-winning three against Duke to advance to this pivotal moment.

The light-hearted exchange quickly took off on social media, with Hurley humorously dubbing the headbutt a “headhug.” When asked about it, he said, “It wasn’t like that. A head hug? I don’t know. More like a nuzzle… you know, like reindeer putting their noses together.”

While some speculated about possible tension, Hurley assured everyone there was no hard feelings between him and Ayers.

“Every referee has a distinct style and personality,” Hurley mentioned. “Roger is one of the best and rarely makes mistakes. He has a fun, playful approach. When he calls a foul, he’ll give you a look. He’s not above a little back-and-forth during the game.”

The Huskies are set to play the winner of the Michigan-Arizona matchup in their third NCAA Championship clash within four seasons.
