Rep Ayanna Pressley describes evictions as ‘a form of violence,’ faces criticism

Rep. Ayanna Pressley avoids questions about her rental property wealth

Controversial Remarks on Evictions by House Democrats

House Democrats are now under fire for likening evictions to acts of violence, a sentiment which seems to contrast with their rental income from a growing real estate portfolio connected to a member’s spouse.

“Eviction is an act of violence,” stated Rep. Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts in a social media video posted on Thursday. She insisted that efforts should be made to prevent this issue, emphasizing, “It undermines the health of the community and carries significant stigma.” Pressley asserted that housing should be considered a human right.

As a progressive figure and member of the Squad, Pressley has consistently championed rent cancellation policies. During the pandemic, she called for a halt to evictions. Recently, she introduced a bill aimed at stopping eviction records from affecting credit reports while also providing legal assistance for those facing eviction.

However, her statements haven’t resonated well with some conservatives and supporters of free market principles. For instance, journalist Brad Polumbo quipped, “When can I move into your house for free?” Conservative commentator Steve Guest critiqued her wording, saying, “The only violence here is what Ayanna Pressley is doing to the meaning of words.”

Pressley’s spokesperson replied to the backlash by reiterating her stance on eviction, highlighting its destabilizing effects on individuals’ lives and asserting that many impacted are women and families with young children.

Critics have previously pointed out what they deem a “hypocrisy” in Pressley’s promotion of rent relief policies while her husband reportedly profits as a landlord.

According to Pressley’s financial disclosures from 2024, she and her husband hold assets worth up to $8 million from several rental properties in Massachusetts. Documents indicate that her spouse earned approximately $350,000 from rental income and real estate dealings. The properties include high-value homes in Martha’s Vineyard, as well as a recently sold condo in Fort Lauderdale.

This isn’t the first time Massachusetts Democrats have faced scrutiny for their remarks. Earlier, they drew comparisons between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and the Ku Klux Klan, sparking further controversy.

In a past interview, Pressley remarked that she doesn’t think groups like the KKK can be reformed, expressing skepticism about the potential for change in violent organizations.
