Rescue Mission Praised by Former Homeland Security Chief
Former President Barack Obama’s Homeland Security Secretary, Jeh Johnson, commended the recent rescue of an F-15E Strike Eagle crew that was shot down in Iranian airspace, suggesting that it was more intricate than the famous operation that killed Osama bin Laden.
Johnson, who served as the Pentagon’s general counsel during the bin Laden mission, described last week’s remarkable rescue as “amazing” and emphasized the need for greater transparency surrounding the military’s actions.
“This operation for the first and second pilots showcases the courage, skill, and strength of the U.S. military,” Johnson stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
He also remarked, “This type of operation is more complex than, say, the bin Laden operation.” It seems like there’s a lot more to unpack here.
On Friday, Iran claimed responsibility for shooting down an American F-15E fighter jet, which had two crew members onboard, in a region near the Iraqi provinces of Kogilye and Boyeh Ahmad. Notably, Iran had previously announced a $60,000 bounty for anyone capturing the crew.
In addition, Iran took down another U.S. military aircraft, an A-10 attack plane, though the pilot managed to reach Kuwaiti airspace before ejecting.
U.S. special forces successfully rescued the first crew member on Friday and later executed a significant operation to extract the second individual, who was injured but mobile.
This second crew member evaded Iranian forces for approximately 36 hours, utilizing a beacon to communicate with U.S. forces while hiding in a crevice, armed only with a handgun. Imagine the tension he must have felt during that ordeal.
The rescue involved American attack aircraft attacking an Iranian convoy surrounding the crew, while special forces engaged with hostile forces prior to reaching the crew.
President Trump stated that there were no American fatalities during the rescue. However, Johnson expressed skepticism about whether these accomplishments validated Trump’s $1.5 trillion military budget proposal to Congress, saying, “This is amazing, and I think Americans deserve to see more about this.”
He continued, “I also believe that the president needs to be more consistent in explaining the sacrifices he is asking the American people to make moving forward.” It’s a bit puzzling how these budget discussions intertwine with such grave matters.
Johnson has been openly critical of Trump but also called out the Democratic Party regarding their handling of the government shutdown.
Looking ahead, President Trump is set to hold a press conference on Monday to provide further details about the successful rescue, which he has labeled as an “Easter miracle.”
He enthusiastically noted, “The fact that we were able to carry out both of these operations without killing or even injuring any Americans proves once again that we have overwhelming air superiority and superiority over Iran,” sharing his thoughts on Truth Social late Saturday.
