Saturday Night Live UK is facing backlash for a controversial joke about Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
During the Weekend Update segment, co-host Ania Mariano stated, “It has been revealed that meth billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is building a bunker on his property in California.” She then added, “And I hope he uses that bunker exactly the same way Hitler did,” prompting a stunned reaction from the audience.
This remark referenced the Führerbunker, the underground shelter where Adolf Hitler spent his final days and ultimately took his life on April 30, 1945.
Many viewers expressed outrage over the joke, with one commenter questioning, “So they want him to kill himself? That line about the bunker… no, but comedy is supposed to push boundaries.” Another viewer remarked, “How about that comedy?” while another suggested that the female anchors need to stop laughing nervously at every joke in hopes of making it funnier.
The joke surfaced amidst reports that Zuckerberg, who is Jewish, has indeed constructed a bunker. Tucked away on his lavish $110 million Palo Alto estate, the underground refuge has been dubbed the “bat cave” by locals and reportedly spans 7,000 square feet.
This extensive project involved years of construction and legal challenges to maintain privacy, yet its design draws inspiration from a rather unexpected source: The Forest Moon of Endor from Star Wars.
Interestingly, Zuckerberg isn’t the only billionaire with a bunker. Reports suggest that many Silicon Valley tech magnates have what’s often referred to as “doomsday insurance.” These bunkers are typically built in secluded locations like New Zealand or Hawaii and come equipped with features like hydroponics and security systems, designed to withstand various disasters. Notable figures like Bill Gates and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman are also said to own similar structures.
Despite gaining over 200,000 views since its launch on March 21, 2026, the British version of SNL has already seen a decline in viewership. The cast comprises talents like Hamed Animashaun, Ayoade Bumboy, and Ania Mariano, among others.
