A man with a history of violent crime has been arrested again after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car, according to authorities.
On April 4, law enforcement was called to respond to a vehicle theft on the west side of Olympia, Washington. The suspect had stolen a Honda Civic and quickly fled the scene, prompting an immediate search for the vehicle.
Minutes later, Tenino police spotted the stolen car. However, the driver refused to pull over, and the chase commenced as the vehicle sped toward the Tumwater area, which is more densely populated.
Footage from the chase shows the suspect driving dangerously fast, at times hitting speeds near 90 miles per hour. Officers communicated back and forth, trying to strategize on how to stop the vehicle before it could enter busier streets.
One officer could be heard saying, “If you get him under 50, take him away before he gets to Tumwater.”
Attempts to curb the suspect’s speed using a grappler device were unsuccessful, so spike strips were deployed. Initially, the suspect halted the vehicle but soon attempted to escape again.
As tensions rose, more resources were brought in, including air support, to track the suspect. Eventually, a deputy from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office executed a precision immobilization technique (PIT maneuver), successfully bringing the car to a stop. Officers then quickly swarmed the vehicle and pulled the suspect out as commands were barked.
Officials revealed that the suspect was already wanted on a fugitive warrant related to an assault charge.
This individual has an extensive record, with 19 felony convictions for various offenses like robbery, assaulting law enforcement, illegal firearm possession, and burglary, among others.
Besides that, he also has over 10 misdemeanor convictions and several instances related to evading police and possessing stolen vehicles.
Now, following this latest incident, he faces new charges including auto theft, attempting to flee from police, driving under the influence, and driving with a suspended license.
Authorities emphasized the serious risk posed by repeat offenders like this one, stating, “Deputies took no risks and acted quickly to stop the threat before it reached a populated area.” The successful capture was credited to the collaboration of various law enforcement agencies, including the Olympia Police Department and the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
