Virginia Governor Spanberger reaches all-time low in job approval, according to poll results.

Spanberger’s Popularity Declines Just Months After Election Success: Poll

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger charmed voters with a decisive win last November, but it seems her approval has taken a nosedive just months into her term.

Currently, 46% of Virginians disapprove of her performance, while 47% remain supportive. This marks the steepest disapproval rating for any Virginia governor at this stage in their term since 1994.

To put things in perspective, her predecessor, Governor Glenn Youngkin, boasted a 54% approval rating compared to a 39% disapproval rate at a similar point, while Democrat Mark Warner, Virginia’s senior senator, held an impressive 78% approval.

Interestingly, Spanberger’s disapproval rate stands out when compared to other governors, like Tim Kaine, who enjoyed a 62% approval rating, or Republican governors like Jim Gilmore III and Bob McDonnell, who had ratings ranging from 59% to 63%.

Spanberger Faces Pressure Over New Developments

After defeating former Lt. Governor Winsome Sears by a significant 15-point margin, Spanberger’s early successes seem to be slipping. Despite appointing fellow Democrats to key positions, her approval is now significantly lower than Youngkin’s had been after his election.

Experts, such as Mark Roselle from George Mason University, noted this trend is unusual given Spanberger’s initial campaign focused on a centrist approach, contrasting with what some view as a recent drift toward more liberal policies.

Additionally, only 7% consider her tenure “too conservative.” Her involvement in the redistricting push has raised eyebrows, particularly as she previously criticized gerrymandering as detrimental to democracy. This inconsistency might be causing some voters to rethink their support.

Shifting Stances on Gun Control

Spanberger is also facing backlash regarding her stance on gun control. As a former CIA officer who previously supported common-sense reforms, her recent alignment with more stringent proposals from Fairfax Democrats raises concerns among her constituents.

“I’m a mother of three girls in public schools and a past federal employee who carried a firearm daily,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to both safety and responsible gun ownership.

Criticism of the new redistricting plan indicates it could potentially diminish rural voices in favor of Spanberger’s stronghold in Fairfax County. The reshaped districts have already attracted notable Democratic candidates, even before the referendum is formally decided.

Despite these challenges, it remains to be seen how Spanberger will navigate her early administration and the mounting pressures from both constituents and party dynamics.
