New Poll Reveals Majority Support for Impeachment of President Trump

A recent press release from the organization Free Speech for People announced a new national poll indicating that a majority of likely voters for the 2026 election are in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump. They emphasized that this level of support is quite unusual and unprecedented for such an early point in a presidential term.

The poll, carried out by Lake Research Partners from March 26 to March 30, surveyed 800 likely voters for the upcoming general election and found that 52% support impeachment while 40% oppose it. Interestingly, 46% expressed strong support for impeachment, while 37% felt strongly against it. An additional 8% were either unsure or had no opinion.

“Impeachment support spans across party lines,” said Free Speech for People, highlighting that 84% of Democrats support it versus 8% who do not. Among independents, support is at 55% while 34% oppose. On the other hand, a significant 81% of Republicans are against impeachment, with only 14% in favor.

The poll also revealed that 38% of respondents approve of Trump’s presidency, while 57% disapprove, including 53% who strongly disagree with his performance.

The survey utilized live telephone and text-to-online interviews, with the sample weighted by various demographics to accurately reflect 2,026 likely voters nationwide. The margin of error stands at plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The demographic composition of those surveyed was 53% female and 47% male. Notably, 30% were aged 65 or older, while 25% fell between 50 and 64 years old. The party breakdown included 39% Democrats, 34% Republicans, 19% independents or undecided voters, and 5% from other parties.

Before addressing impeachment, the poll introduced the topic by stating, “Several members of Congress have recently supported impeaching President Donald Trump for violating Americans’ constitutional rights and laws, including actions by ICE in the U.S. and the war against Iran that President Trump initiated.”

During a virtual press conference hosted by Free Speech for People President John Bonifaz, it was mentioned that “more than a million people across America” have voiced support for Trump’s impeachment. Bonifaz noted that over 25 grounds for impeachment have been documented by the organization.

In collaboration with various groups, Free Speech for People recently launched a campaign urging Congress to impeach Trump and senior officials, citing reasons such as Trump’s military actions and a “larger pattern of unchecked aggression.”

Polling expert David Mermin highlighted that in his 30 years of experience, he has never seen majority support for impeachment so early in a presidential term. He pointed out that past majority opinions on impeachment usually emerged later in a presidency, such as during the impeachments of Nixon and Trump, but the current findings are notably different.

Among independents, Mermin described the 55% wanting impeachment as a significant “water mark” against Trump. Remarkably, he noted that about one in seven Republican voters also believe Trump should be impeached, viewing him as unfit for the presidency.

The new poll arrives as Democratic lawmakers and officials consider a third potential impeachment effort against President Trump. Recently, Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA) discussed this possibility. Trump himself suggested he “should be impeached right now” regarding actions taken against Iran, hinting that he would proceed with impeachment if Democrats regain Congressional control. Democratic strategist James Carville echoed this sentiment, saying if Democrats secure the House majority, Trump “will be impeached in 2027.”
