Comedian Chelsea Handler Criticizes Marriage as 'Old-Fashioned,' Remarks 'You’re Sort of Property'

Comedian and Democratic activist Chelsea Handler criticized marriage, calling it “outdated” and “a really stupid idea,” emphasizing that her top priority is “freedom.” She described marriage as feeling like “a bit of an asset.”

Handler mentioned on the Angie Martinez IRL podcast that she’s not particularly drawn to having a partner. “To grab my attention, you really need to stand out; otherwise, it’s just a fleeting meeting,” she said.

Chelsea expressed that she enjoys casual encounters, stating, “I love it. I love traveling. I love dating men. Serious relationships? Not really my thing. I prefer not having someone invade my space all the time.”

“My vibe is all about freedom. I want freedom,” she stated. When Angie Martinez shared that she has older children, Handler remarked, “I’ve cooked. I’m done. I’m free,” which might imply that she would’ve appreciated having kids if she didn’t have to handle the early responsibilities.

Handler also shared her preference for independence, saying, “I don’t have to check in with anyone about what I’m doing. There’s no need to consult anyone.”

Handler emphasized that spontaneous trips are more valuable to her than leaving a legacy when she’s gone. “If I wanted to hop on a plane to Paris, I’d do it, or maybe spend a month solo in Mallorca,” she said.

When asked about growing old with someone, Handler hinted at wanting to share herself with the vast population, saying, “Yeah, sure, but there are eight million of us,” mistakenly saying “million” instead of “billion,” which felt a little off.

“You shouldn’t view yourself as being alone; think of yourself as being free. Now I can make decisions just for me,” she continued. “You can do whatever you want. It’ll be a lot of fun.”

At one point, Handler shared she’s dating a “much younger” man nicknamed “Cowboy,” whom she met while playing blackjack in Las Vegas when she asked him for a loan of a thousand dollars.

Despite their connection, Handler maintains that marriage is an “outdated” and “stupid” tradition, insisting, “It’s not something I can do.”

“I think marriage is outdated. It’s a really stupid idea,” she asserted, adding that it would come off as “hypocritical” to tie the knot after openly criticizing it for so long.

“I mean, I probably would think about marriage at some point, like, ‘Okay, I’m 50, maybe I should get married. What’s the issue?’” Handler admitted.

“But I’m not interested in marriage. I see it as a very patriarchal institution. You’re like a bit of property,” she concluded.

In 2024, Handler claimed to pose a “threat” to “straight men,” mentioning her choice to live as a “single” woman without children. In 2019, she humorously noted that her “first black boyfriend” impregnated her twice, leading to two abortions.
