Rep. John Larson Targets Impeachment of Trump

Representative John Larson (D-Conn.) is pursuing a bold move to impeach President Trump as he navigates new challenges from younger contenders aiming to disrupt Trump’s push for a 15th term in Congress.

At 77, Larson introduced 13 articles of impeachment on Monday, pointing to several contentious actions taken by the president. These include military intervention in Venezuela, the deployment of National Guard troops across various cities, and an executive order that seeks to limit birthright citizenship.

Among the charges, Larson accuses Trump of serious offenses such as “murder, war crimes, and piracy.” This stems from actions like enforcing a naval blockade around Venezuela against oil tankers sanctioned by the U.S. and launching attacks on vessels suspected of drug trafficking in the Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean prior to January’s U.S. seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

In part, the resolution states, “Through his continuous usurpation of Congress’s war powers and his commission of murder, war crimes, and piracy, Donald J. Trump has acted contrary to his confidence as President and as a destroyer of the Constitution, with great prejudice against law, liberty, and justice, and with clear harm to the people of the United States.”

Even if Larson pushes for a vote the week of April 13, when Congress reconvenes, it’s unlikely to succeed in the Republican-dominated House, which makes the prospect of a Senate trial remote.

This impeachment effort coincides with Larson facing intense primary competition from younger candidates promoting a theme of generational change. As the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Larson has a significant role, although he once experienced a complex partial seizure while speaking in February 2025.

Luke Bronin, 46, a former mayor and military veteran, has publicly called for Larson to resign after nearly three decades in the House, launching a primary challenge aimed at challenging established leadership.

The support for Larson’s impeachment from House Democratic leadership remains uncertain, as a spokesperson for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has yet to comment.

Larson’s move isn’t unique—he joins a number of House Democrats who have introduced impeachment articles against Trump since he took office for a second term.

On another note, President Trump has issued a warning that if Democrats regain control of the House in 2027, they might attempt a third impeachment against him. Meanwhile, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not dismissed this possibility but emphasized that Democrats are focused on addressing economic concerns like the rising cost of living.

As of now, attempts to reach Larson and the White House for comment have been made.
