Samsung Bids Farewell to Messaging App in the U.S.
SAMUNG has announced that it will discontinue its messaging app, Samsung Messages, specifically for customers in the United States.
As detailed on Samsung’s U.S. support site, the app will cease operations in July. Users are encouraged to transition to Google Messages to ensure a seamless messaging experience on Android devices.
Samsung smartphone and gadget owners need to download Google Messages from the Play Store and set it as their default messaging app, if they haven’t done so already. I wonder how many people will actually make that switch without a hitch.
Some users might receive notifications within the app to assist them through the transition process.
By switching to Google Messages, users can look forward to enhancements like the latest AI features in Google’s Gemini platform. This includes a new feature called “Remix,” which generates images during chats, suggestions for AI-powered replies, and high-quality photo sharing between Android and iOS users via RCS-enabled messages. It does sound intriguing, but I guess I’d have to see it to really believe it.
Interestingly, those still using older Android versions (like Android 11 and earlier) won’t be affected by the shutdown of Samsung Messages.
If you want to check your device’s Android version, just navigate to the Settings app, select Software Information, and look for the Android Version section.
In the meantime, users of the latest Samsung devices, including the Galaxy 26 lineup, currently won’t be able to download the Samsung Messages app from the Galaxy Store.
Once July arrives and Samsung Messages is officially retired, it won’t be available for download on any device. I suppose most people have already adjusted by then, right?
Samsung has also pointed out that this service termination is specific to the U.S. market, as confirmed in a website update just this Tuesday.
