Attorney General Blanche Reports 8,000 Fraud Cases in Progress; DOJ Collaborating with Vance's Anti-Fraud Task Force

Department of Justice Tackles Fraud with New Initiatives

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on Tuesday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently dealing with “8,000 active fraud cases” while collaborating with the newly established Fraud Task Force led by Vice President J.D. Vance.

During a press conference, Blanche elaborated on the DOJ’s initiatives and its partnership with the Anti-Fraud Task Force.

“The Department of Justice is holding accountable criminals who have stolen over $500 million from taxpayers, and right now, we have more than 8,000 fraud cases in U.S. Attorney’s offices nationwide,” Blanche stated.

He added, “Sadly, these cases are just a tiny portion of the ongoing scams that target our nation every day.”

Blanche noted that, due to President Trump’s guidance, the department is intensifying its partnership with the Fraud Elimination Task Force to enhance their commitment to combating fraud.

He also pointed out recent developments in major fraud cases, emphasizing the department’s progress this week. “For instance, as recently as Tuesday, we had a defendant sentenced, and we secured two guilty pleas in healthcare and COVID-19 fraud cases resulting in a total of over $500 million,” he mentioned.

“If you think about it, just since yesterday, we had a guilty plea connected to a $160 million healthcare fraud case, and a sentencing related to a $100 million COVID-19 fraud,” he added, reflecting on the swift actions being taken.

Since its initiation on March 16, the Special Committee to Combat Fraud has already seen noteworthy results. Reports showed that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) suspended 221 hospice and home health care providers in California for suspected fraud since March 25.

“We anticipate that this figure will rise markedly in the upcoming weeks,” a senior official from the Trump administration mentioned.

The DOJ has begun making arrests and executing search warrants in Los Angeles concerning alleged hospice and healthcare fraud.

In a recent task force roundtable, Vance outlined comprehensive steps to reinforce anti-fraud protections and advance a whole-of-government strategy to tackle fraud effectively.

“Many long-standing anti-fraud measures were revoked under the Biden administration, making fraud a significant issue,” Vance remarked, indicating the urgency of the matter.

Vance further explained the importance of reinstating protections, allowing officials to monitor the situation more efficiently. “Our goal is to foster collaboration across departments for the task force to succeed,” he remarked.

“When Bobby Kennedy was in discussions about Medicare and Medicaid, he ensured communication with the Treasury Department. We need to revive that kind of coordination among various government sectors to ensure we’re addressing fraud effectively,” he concluded.

It’s notable that Vance recently appointed Colin MacDonald as the Assistant Attorney General for Fraud Enforcement.
