Braves and Angels Experience Dramatic Confrontation
The matchup between the Braves and Angels took a surprising turn on Tuesday night.
And let’s just say, the vibe in Anaheim wasn’t exactly heavenly.
In a game where Atlanta emerged victorious with a score of 7-2, a major brawl broke out, involving Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler and Braves pitcher Reynaldo López trading punches.
It all escalated during the bottom of the fifth inning. Soler hit a ball that rolled back to the backstop, allowing Nolan Chanuel to advance from first to second base.
Things got intense when Soler seemed to be eyeing the pitch closely, especially as López got a new ball for his next throw. López looked surprised at Soler’s reaction. But then, out of nowhere, Soler dropped his bat, and, soon enough, both were throwing punches as players rushed from the dugouts.
“I asked him if everything was OK, and I didn’t like the answer he gave me,” Soler said later through an interpreter. “That’s why I went out there.”
As the situation escalated, multiple Braves players managed to tackle Soler to the ground, preventing any real damage from being done to López. Notably, Angels star Mike Trout and Braves first-base coach Antoan Richardson stepped in, pushing López away while others surrounded Soler.
Braves manager Walt Weiss was also seen confronting Soler, the 2021 World Series MVP. He expressed his concern, stating, “I love Soler. We were teammates here. But he was a big guy, and I knew I had to stand him up, because he was going to hurt somebody.”
Once the chaos settled down, both Soler and López were ejected from the game, while no other players faced disciplinary action.
Interestingly, López still had the baseball in hand when he managed to punch Soler’s helmet.
Earlier in the game, Soler hit a two-run home run, the only two runs López conceded in his abbreviated outing.
His impressive performance included a remarkable 23-for-23 at-bat record and three doubles against López.
“I obviously have good numbers against him,” Soler acknowledged. “After the home run and being hit by a pitch, he threw high and too close to my head. You can’t throw like that at this level.”
It’s worth noting that the two had been teammates in Atlanta during the latter half of the 2024 season.
“This situation and development is just unfortunate,” López remarked through an interpreter. “For me, it was never my intention to hit him at any point. So, again, I’m really disappointed.”
