Slotkin Looks Toward 2028 Presidential Run, Focuses on Midterms
Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) is keeping her options open regarding a potential presidential bid in 2028. However, she emphasizes that her current priority is helping Democrats secure seats in the House and Senate during the upcoming midterm elections.
While campaigning for local Democrats in Iowa, Slotkin reflected on the idea of running for president. “I’m not arrogant enough to think it has to be me,” she mentioned. “Right now, I’m focused on the midterm elections, but if I start feeling like no one else is on the right path, I won’t be able to say no forever.”
At a City Hall event, she expressed concern over the divisive state of politics in Washington, noting that she’s heard voters’ frustrations with partisanship echoed nationwide.
“I want to win in November,” she stated, according to the Associated Press. “It means being honest about where Democrats need to go.”
Slotkin gained national attention after narrowly winning her Senate seat and has been vocal against certain Trump administration policies. She was among a group of six Democratic lawmakers who encouraged military personnel to resist “unlawful orders.” This stance drew accusations of sedition from Trump, prompting a Justice Department investigation.
Entering Congress in 2018, she flipped a Republican seat in a pivotal battleground state previously held by former Congressman Mike Bishop.
In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Slotkin urged her party to remember the importance of Midwestern states like Michigan, expressing awareness of the state’s voter base and early voting options. “I’ll be in the cage match between Iowa and Michigan for my first fight,” she remarked, candidly admitting, “I’m not going to lie and say I’m going to give it to Iowa when I really want it to be Michigan.”
