Mexican Truckers and Farmers Halt Highways Nationwide Seeking Safety

Protests in Mexico Highlight Farmers’ Concerns

Farmers and truck drivers across Mexico staged peaceful highway blockades to shed light on ongoing violence and insufficient government support. Instead of addressing the widespread protests that have effectively paralyzed the country, President Claudia Sheinbaum attributed the unrest to political maneuvers by opposing parties.

The demonstrations kicked off Monday morning, with members from various agricultural labor unions and syndicates blocking roads in at least a dozen states. This initiative had been planned days in advance to raise awareness about the persistent violence inflicted by drug cartels, which often extort farmers and truck drivers as part of their operations. Some protesters occupied toll booths, allowing vehicles to pass without charge while holding banners. In certain instances, roads were completely closed for several hours.

In response, President Sheinbaum noted that she did not believe these protests were necessary, as the government had been making efforts to address the farmers’ concerns and enhance support for the agricultural sector. She suggested that the chaos was driven by political operatives affiliated with rival parties intending to destabilize her administration for political gain.

She stated, “There are three or four leaders pushing for highway closures.” She highlighted that the underlying goal of the protests appeared to be securing new government subsidies, particularly as grain prices drop globally due to oversupply.

By Monday evening, the protests concluded, and traffic returned to normal.
