Reynaldo López’s Suspension Reduced
It seems that Reynaldo López might not miss his upcoming start after all.
The suspension handed to the Braves’ starting pitcher for a bench-clearing brawl on Tuesday night has been cut from seven games down to five, following discussions with MLB, as mentioned in reports.
This adjustment paves the way for him to take the mound against the Marlins on Tuesday, which is a relief for the team.
During a recent game in Anaheim, López found himself in the middle of a tense situation. He threw a pitch high, prompting Jorge Soler, a former Braves teammate now with the Angels, to react strongly to the move.
In the heat of the moment, Soler ran at López, throwing a punch. López, perhaps caught up in the fray, retaliated with the ball in his hand, striking Soler in the helmet and face.
“This situation, the way things have unfolded, is really unfortunate,” López expressed through an interpreter. “I never meant to hit him. Honestly, I’m really disappointed.” It’s interesting—even athletes can feel really conflicted about these altercations.
The situation escalated as Soler rushed from the pitcher’s mound towards first base, leading to several Braves players, including Atlanta’s captain Walt Weiss, tackling him to prevent further chaos.
Weiss commented on the incident, saying, “I love Soler. We were teammates here. But he’s a big guy, and I knew I needed to intervene because he was going to hurt someone.” It’s fascinating how, even in moments like these, instinct can take over.
Soler plans to appeal the suspension he received, yet he still managed to hit his second consecutive home run in the Angels’ loss to Atlanta the following day.
Both players involved will face undisclosed fines due to their roles in the brawl, which reveals just how seriously these incidents are taken.
Interestingly, López has been off to a great start this season, boasting a remarkable 1.15 ERA in his three appearances.
