The Boys Season 5 Premiere Details
Season 5 of The Boys is set to launch with an even darker atmosphere than the conclusion of Season 4, where Huey and the team went their separate ways.
The new season kicks off with Annie (portrayed by Erin Moriarty) sneaking into the Vought International Annual General Meeting. She leaks footage of Flight 37, which reveals Homelander’s refusal to help a plane full of crash survivors. However, Vought manages to twist the narrative, claiming it was generated by AI, leaving Annie feeling like her attempt has failed.
Moriarty shared her enthusiasm about this twist with DECIDER, saying it’s “really cool.” She feels the interplay with AI is particularly relevant, commenting, “It felt very zeitgeist.”
This footage was supposed to be Annie’s ace in the hole—something strong enough to potentially defeat Homelander, or as Moriarty put it, “cut his armor in half.” Yet, Sister Sage quickly points out that the aftermath was “minimal.” Acknowledging this, Annie confides in Butcher, expressing disappointment that her plan “didn’t move an inch.” Moriarty even concedes that the whole strategy was a “failure.”
Interestingly, the leaked footage backfires on Homelander in a huge way. The embarrassment he feels pushes him to target Annie and Butcher more aggressively as the season unfolds.
The premiere illustrates the dire situation facing Annie and her allies. Homelander makes a dramatic entrance at the shareholders’ meeting, labeling Starlight as a “terrorist organization” before a crowd clad in eerily familiar bright red hats, receiving enthusiastic applause. In the fallout from Annie’s actions, he orders the establishment of more Freedom Camps and detains American citizens who support the Starlight Movement.
Moriarty highlights Annie’s determination, saying, “This is a testament to how persevering she is.” She appreciates the incorporation of contemporary themes, noting, “Our writers always do a great job of weaving all of these topical motifs into the show.”
There’s a lot in store for viewers.
Moriarty cautions fans, “I’m telling you this to prepare you for watching the final season of the show. Don’t get too empathetic with any character. If you’re going to empathize or become attached to someone, be ready—no one is safe all the time.”
A new episode of The Boys premieres on Wednesday on Prime Video.
