Michigan Democratic Senate Candidate Backs Hasan Piker Despite Controversial Remarks

Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, is showing support for the left-wing influencer Hasan Piker, even though Piker has made some highly controversial statements, including remarks about 9/11 and anti-Semitic comments. Piker has been known to claim that the U.S. deserved the 9/11 attacks and generally speaks with a disdainful tone towards patriotism. His support base online is considerable, but this association worries some Democrats who think it might negatively impact their position in pivotal Michigan Senate races during the upcoming midterms, possibly alienating swing voters.

A House Democrat seeking re-election in a competitive district has previously stated that his hometown is “stolen land” and expressed that racism is “embedded” in much of American life, based on a video reviewed. New Mexico Representative Gabe Vazquez shared these views back in 2020 before he was elected to Congress. In an interview, he pointed out that the land had once belonged to Mexico and was home to Native Americans.

“Racism runs deep in every aspect of our lives,” Vazquez noted. His views seem to have shifted, perhaps due to the contentious political environment, as he mentioned that his optimism regarding the eradication of racism has diminished, viewing it as a generational issue deeply knitted into systems.

As he looks to secure a third term in November, Vazquez made these comments while serving on the Las Cruces City Council, the largest city in southwestern New Mexico. He won his congressional seat in January 2023, presenting himself as a moderate after defeating the Republican incumbent.

In a striking contrast, Vazquez hinted at a willingness to replace some police officers with licensed mental health professionals to address certain situations. “Whenever cuts to any department’s funding are necessary, I’ll support that, but right now, I don’t think we need to make those sacrifices,” he remarked.

Vazquez appeared to provide justification for the protests that erupted after George Floyd’s death. There were instances where he used a pseudonym in interviews to express views aligned with the defund the police movement during that period.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has asserted in response that Vazquez has maintained a supportive stance toward law enforcement throughout his congressional career. According to a spokeswoman, he has backed significant funding for police departments, amounting to over $4 billion this year alone.

In a pointed statement, the Republican National Committee did not hold back criticism of Vazquez’s earlier comments. They labeled him as “sick,” suggesting he was afflicted with what they termed the “woke mind virus,” and they argued that he should be cautious in understanding how his remarks could be perceived as broadly labeling Americans as racist.

As competition heats up, Vazquez has become a significant target for national Republicans looking to contest the district in 2024, particularly with Trump’s influence still evident despite some declining approval ratings.

Fox News Digital has made attempts to contact Vazquez’s campaign for further comments.
