How IBM is assisting fans in enhancing their Masters experience

The Excellence of the Masters Tournament

When it comes to the annual Masters Tournament, everything about it is, well, spectacular. For golf enthusiasts, this isn’t news; Augusta National has built a legacy of greatness over many years.

There are, quite simply, things that are deemed perfect—let’s call it “Masters perfect.” Alongside all the excitement surrounding the first week of April, there’s a focus on what those involved aim to deliver. I recently discussed this idea with Kameryn Stanhouse, one of IBM’s top strategists responsible for ensuring that “Masters Perfect Manners” are upheld throughout the event.

This week, IBM graciously invited us to experience the Masters in person. It was fascinating to see firsthand how they maintain such high standards during the tournament.

The Masters App: An Exceptional Experience

A standout aspect of the Masters is undoubtedly its renowned app. It’s arguably the best sports app out there, and considering that it’s only used for one week each year, that’s quite an achievement.

IBM has taken things up a notch this year, introducing significant upgrades for the app centered around watsonx AI capabilities. This year marks the 90th Masters and the 30th year IBM has been involved, making it a fitting occasion for innovation.

The app offers fans a variety of features. For example, the Masters Vault allows users to revisit the final rounds of past broadcasts, dating back to 1968. Thanks to advancements in AI, fans can now search for specific shots from those rounds.

You can request things however you wish. It’s quite remarkable how this technology responds almost instantaneously. This enhancement adds to the already impressive Masters Vault.

This marks the third time IBM has revamped Hole Insights for the Masters. Since the tournament takes place on the same grounds every year, the technology that IBM implements can churn out a wealth of statistics tied to both present and historical events.

Data collection occurs throughout Augusta National. I was fortunate enough to attend a detailed presentation from IBM, which shed light on this impressive system.

As soon as the ball stops at Augusta, specific coordinates are taken and compared to archives for each hole. Watsonx analyzes this and provides “Hole Insight,” detailing probabilities for players’ chances and contextual information.

The results, blending current and past data, are truly fascinating. The technology pulls from a robust context. Iconic figures like Jim ‘Bones’ McKay have contributed to ensure the analyses are as rich and precise as they can be.

One notable feature is a 3D model of Augusta National, which visualizes every shot taken at the Masters over the last decade. This is a treasure trove of data that you can explore through the app to gain deeper insights.

There’s an impressive collection of over 200,000 shots in this dataset—a reminder of memorable Masters moments. With the help of IBM and the app, golf fans gain remarkable access to context and detail during this celebrated week.

As I walked around Augusta National, absorbing the tech, waiting for famous snacks, and enjoying a Georgia Peach ice cream sandwich, I couldn’t help but think about Kameryn’s insights on “Masters Perfect.”

Kameryn emphasized, during our earlier discussion, that IBM is not just after perfection—they are striving for something even greater. The Masters demands more than mere perfection.

“Masters Perfect” is the benchmark, and IBM consistently meets this standard in all their endeavors. Their dedication ensures that we can all relish this week even more.

And that, in essence, is what “Masters Perfect” truly represents.
