Disney fans celebrate as the company overturns its theme park decision based on DEI initiatives

Disney’s Evolving Language at the Parks

It’s been almost five years since The Walt Disney Company adopted the corporate focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion within its theme parks. Yet, some guests are noticing a familiar tone, or perhaps a shift.

Fast forward to 2021, when Disney announced it would phase out the classic announcement “Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls” at Magic Kingdom. In its place, they introduced “Good evening, dreamers of all ages,” reflecting a larger initiative to make communication within the park feel more inclusive.

Initially, this change appeared minor but carried weight, symbolizing Disney’s alignment with contemporary values. However, recent discussions on social media platforms suggest a possible retreat from that commitment. A video showed a monorail announcement directing passengers as “Ladies and Gentlemen,” a phrase Disney had previously moved away from.

No formal announcement has been made to explain this apparent change. Yet, considering Disney’s meticulous script, even slight modifications can indicate more significant trends.

For many long-time visitors, it’s not just about the wording; it represents something larger—a potential return to tradition or a pause in the ongoing shift in language.

Various Disney-focused websites have remarked that the removal of traditional terms felt more impactful than many had expected. Some described it as a crucial part of what draws fans to the parks. The unique rhythm of the classic phrase resonated with visitors, making it memorable. Reports indicate a significant shift in how Disney staff are trained, with performers encouraged to opt for phrases like “Hello, everyone” or “Hello, friends” instead of gender-specific greetings.

Additionally, Disney’s approach has included more than just language alterations. In 2023, the company collaborated with a person identifying as “gender fluid” to promote a Minnie Mouse-themed costume set. Earlier, there was even a Disneyland employee seen greeting young guests at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique while wearing a dress, highlighting the ongoing changes in Disney’s presentation.

When asked for clarification about reinstating gendered language in announcements, Disney Parks did not respond.
