Newsom's wife criticized for video implying San Quentin inmates ended up there by 'accident'

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, has faced criticism for remarks she made years ago suggesting that incarcerated individuals in California’s infamous prisons might have ended up there “by chance.”

These comments emerged during a 2016 event where she recounted a tragic incident from her childhood—specifically, a golf cart accident that claimed her older sister’s life just days before Siebel Newsom turned seven. She shared her personal loss in an effort to connect with juvenile offenders at San Quentin, saying, “I blame myself for that death.” She expressed the idea that, just as she experienced accidental tragedy, maybe the prisoners had similar circumstances leading them to commit violent acts. “I think it’s shocking that this blonde woman had a comparable story,” she added, hinting at the idea that these situations could be seen as unfortunate accidents.

Amid the renewed focus on her past remarks, a spokesperson for her clarified that Siebel Newsom’s 2016 comments related to her documentary, “The Mask You Live In,” which addressed issues around masculinity and identity.

In recent days, her comments reignited debate, especially among conservative critics who interpreted her words as virtuous signaling. For example, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) shot back sarcastically, questioning the notion that someone could “accidentally” commit serious crimes. Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, remarked on social media about her statements, expressing disbelief.

As the video of her comments circulated, responses on social media varied. Some critics expressed strong concern about how she characterized the experiences of individuals serving long sentences. Others framed it as a diversion from more pressing national issues. Yet, amidst all this, a commentator like Adam Carolla acknowledged that she represents California’s broader challenges.

Riley Gaines, a conservative activist, criticized Siebel Newsom’s comments, suggesting they revealed a significant disconnect from the realities faced by those in prison, calling it “peak elite tone deafness.”
