Bahamas Authorities Arrest Husband of Missing American Tourist
Authorities in the Bahamas have detained Brian Hooker, the husband of missing American tourist Lynette Hooker. This action was prompted by concerns raised by her daughter, who reported that she feared “something might have happened” on the night her mother went missing.
Brian, 59, was apprehended in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, on Wednesday evening, four days after Lynette’s unexplained disappearance last Saturday night.
According to Brian, Lynette “fell” from their 8-foot dinghy while they were returning to their yacht at Elbow Cay. However, the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Assistant Commissioner Advardo Dames indicated that the arrest was made for “additional questioning” based on probable cause. Although Brian is a suspect, no formal charges have yet been filed.
His attorney, Terrel Butler, asserted that Brian denies any wrongdoing, particularly in light of accusations made by Karli Aylesworth, Lynette’s daughter. Butler emphasized that his client has been working with authorities amid the ongoing investigation.
Brian recounted that the dinghy’s engine failed just as Lynette fell overboard. He claimed she had been carrying the keys, necessitating him to paddle to the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard around 4:00 AM local time on Sunday. Nevertheless, Karli has voiced doubts about this account, particularly regarding how Lynette could have had the keys since Brian typically held that responsibility.
In an interview, Karli expressed skepticism about the entire situation, questioning how it was possible for her mother to just fall off without Brian making efforts to rescue her. “Even if she did fall,” she noted, “I can’t believe he didn’t anchor or swim to her since he’s a Marine.”
Similarly, a family friend, Daniel Danforth, has raised concerns about inconsistencies between Brian’s narrative and official police reports. He pointed out that while authorities claimed Brian saw Lynette swept away, his private messages indicated she was “casually swimming back” toward the sailboat. This led Danforth to question why he didn’t try to reach her if that were true.
Moreover, Danforth mentioned that the couple usually kept their phones handy and often shared video updates online. So, he found it odd that Brian’s phone supposedly failed that night.
Karli further noted troubling signs in her stepfather’s behavior, specifically that he did not inform her of her mother’s disappearance until around a day had passed. On his part, Brian told the police that he lost sight of Lynette in tumultuous waters, and he even posted on Facebook just hours before his arrest, expressing deep sorrow over the situation.
“I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy,” he stated in the post. “Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart.”
Lynette’s mother, Darlene Hamlett, is also seeking clarity on the circumstances, emphasizing, “I’m interested in what he has to say since I haven’t heard from him in almost two days.” She is holding out hope for a positive outcome amid the uncertainty.
Karli reiterated her concerns about the investigation, insisting, “My main priority is finding out what happened to my mother and ensuring a thorough investigation is conducted.” She expressed that if it turns out to be an accident, she could accept it, but it’s crucial that the facts and circumstances are meticulously reviewed.
The couple, who have documented their sailing adventures for over a decade, now find themselves at the center of a U.S. Coast Guard criminal investigation into Lynette’s disappearance.
