SAN FRANCISCO — Last night at the Chase Center was a matchup between a skilled team still vying for something important and a less experienced team working through its challenges.
The Lakers took down the Warriors 119-103 in their first game of a back-to-back series. Despite injuries to key players like Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart, and Jackson Hayes, they maintained a talent edge.
This lack of continuity, as the Lakers adjusted to these changes, was noticeable. Some lineups they employed hadn’t even played together until this game. The Lakers ended up committing 19 turnovers, which allowed the Warriors to capitalize with 22 points.
On the other hand, the Warriors were missing several stars, most notably Stephen Curry, who has been out for almost two months. They seemed to find their rhythm early, keeping the game competitive.
Ultimately, the Lakers’ talent prevailed. They outscored the Warriors 66-54 in the second half, putting an end to their three-game losing streak.
LeBron James, back on the court after missing the previous game against the Thunder, led the Lakers with 26 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds in 32 minutes. Deandre Ayton also contributed significantly with 21 points and five rebounds, making 9 of 11 attempts. All five starters for the Lakers reached double figures.
Brandin Podzemski was the standout for the Warriors with 17 points.
What It Means
This victory marked the Lakers’ first win since the injuries to Doncic and Reaves, improving their season record to 51-29 and securing their position in fourth place in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, the Warriors, sitting at 37-43 and locked into 10th place, are looking to fine-tune their performance ahead of the play-in tournament.
Turning Point
The pivotal moment came on Thursday afternoon when Curry was ruled out. His absence diminished the likelihood of a competitive game and snatched away one of the last opportunities to see Curry face off against James this season.
MVP: LeBron James
James scored 11 of 17 from the field and dished out five assists early in the fourth quarter, putting the Lakers firmly in charge of the game. This marked his second consecutive double-double in points and assists.
Game Status: 37
The Lakers recorded their highest assists total in a game, falling just short of matching their season-high of 38. Since Doncic and Reaves went down, they’ve notched at least 36 assists in each game James has played.
Luke Kennard contributed with 14 points and eight assists.
To the Next
Both teams are set to complete their back-to-back matchups on Friday night. The Lakers will head back to Southern California to face the Suns, while the Warriors will travel to Sacramento to play against the Kings.
