Jack Nicklaus’ Ceremonial Tee Shot Raises Eyebrows at the Masters
During the Masters on Thursday, Jack Nicklaus startled fans with his ceremonial tee shot, which landed alarmingly close to the spectators. The revered golfer, who has claimed 18 major titles, forewarned the crowd before his swing, a precaution that turned out to be quite necessary.
As he stepped up to the tee, the 86-year-old cautioned, “Well, be careful. I’m not joking.” His warning proved somewhat prophetic. While 90-year-old Gary Player’s shot sailed straight down the first fairway, Nicklaus’ drive veered low and to the left, narrowly clearing onlookers’ heads.
Reflecting on the moment, Nicklaus remarked, “I told them to spread out, just in case, because we don’t want to harm anyone. If it had been a tad closer, I might have done something different.”
Tom Watson, 76, followed up with a more conventional shot that landed right on target.
Despite his recent carpal tunnel surgery about six weeks prior, Nicklaus expressed a strong desire to participate in this beloved Masters tradition. He candidly admitted, “I wasn’t sure if I’d even be able to stand on the tee box. I was worried that I’d grab the club and, you know, accidentally hurt someone.” That said, he was relieved the ball flew over rather than at anyone.
Interestingly, he acknowledged his limited play recently, mentioning he only managed to hit the links once last year and once again in February.
Nicklaus ended with genuine appreciation, saying, “It’s a really great ceremony, and I’m deeply honored to be invited. As long as nobody gets hurt, I hope to keep participating.”
