Travis Hunter’s New Role with the Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly planning to change how they utilize Travis Hunter, the former Heisman Trophy winner, in the upcoming season.

At just 22 years old, Hunter, known for his two-way play in college, is expected to transition to a full-time cornerback position. The team’s strategy seems to focus on maximizing his abilities. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jaguars envision him primarily as a corner, with some participation as a receiver. He mentioned in a conversation with the team last year that this was likely where they felt he could provide the most value.

During his time on the field last season, Hunter was involved in 67% of the team’s offensive plays but only 36% on defense before suffering a season-ending knee injury in practice before Week 9. Thankfully, reports indicate that he’s recovering well from a torn LCL.

While Hunter, drafted second overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, may not fully participate in OTAs, the team is optimistic about his return for training camp.

In his brief seven-game stint last season, Hunter made 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown. On defense, he contributed 15 tackles and made three pass breakups. His standout performance came in a game against the Los Angeles Rams in London, where he caught eight passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.

The Jaguars had a successful previous season, clinching the AFC South title with a 13-4 record, although they were eliminated by the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Game. They’re hopeful that Hunter’s comeback can help propel them further this season.

With Greg Newsome II, a starting cornerback from last year, having signed with the New York Giants, there’s an opportunity for Hunter to step into a significant role.
