Swalwell’s Gubernatorial Campaign Faces Fallout from Serious Allegations
Rep. Eric Swalwell’s bid for governor is facing significant challenges following allegations from a former staffer about sexual harassment and assault. The accusations have led to a dramatic decline in his campaign’s momentum.
Despite previously leading in Democratic polls to replace California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom, Swalwell is now confronted with mounting pressures to step down.
In a recent statement, Rep. Jimmy Gomez expressed his concern, stating, “I’ve learned distressing details about Eric Swalwell that include some very serious accusations.” Gomez, citing a breakdown of trust, announced his immediate resignation from Swalwell’s campaign.
The former staff member claims that Swalwell assaulted her twice while she was too intoxicated to give consent. She has also alleged that he sent her explicit images via Snapchat.
Swalwell has denied the allegations, emphasizing his history of serving the public and committing to women’s protection. “I will defend myself with the facts and take legal action if necessary,” he stated. His focus, he added, is on his family and countering what he sees as falsehoods.
In response to the allegations, Swalwell’s attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter to one of his accusers. Following the fallout, several senior officials have departed from the campaign, and the California Teachers Association has suspended its support.
“This allegation is deeply disturbing to Congressman Swalwell and unacceptable. We are immediately suspending our support,” said CTA President David Goldberg.
Meanwhile, in the race for governor, Republican Steve Hilton is currently leading against Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco.
Swalwell’s campaign has also canceled an upcoming town hall event in Palm Desert, citing illness.
